Why NYC? Why not! Black Girls Tennis Club expanded to New York City to honor the city’s incredible Black tennis legacy. From the iconic Arthur Ashe Tennis Center to the world’s largest tennis event, the US Open, New York has always been the proving ground for possibility. It’s where Althea Gibson became the first Black athlete to compete in a US national tennis competition and where Serena Williams won her first Grand Slam at just 17, setting a new standard for excellence. This legacy continues with Sloane Stephens, Naomi Osaka, and Coco Gauff all etching their names in history, winning their first Grand Slam titles right here in the city! Climbing the coast from Hampton Roads to NYC felt like a natural next step as we add to this rich tradition of excellence for Black girls and women. With so much tennis history woven into the fabric of NYC streets, Black Girls Tennis Club is here to cultivate a community where we can find joy, prioritize wellness, and PLAY. So here’s to breaking barriers in the boroughs and keeping the legacy alive!
