Why do we need Black Girls Tennis Club?

Many individuals from Black communities are underrepresented in sports such as tennis.
Tennis is considered one of the most popular sports worldwide, however, there is a lack of diversity.

Approximately 78% of tennis players are white and only 6.8% are Black.

With such a low percentage of Black people who engage in the sport, BGTC seeks to change the sport’s racial disparity.

If families cannot afford the cost of a sport like tennis, their children have restricted access to safe spaces where they can bond and engage in physical activity.

In 2022, the average cost of a private tennis lesson is $60 per hour.

80% of female Fortune 500 executives played competitive sports at one point in their lives.

Proving that getting involved early in competitive sports may create a pipeline to leadership.

Studies show there is a lack of exposure to tennis, including tennis centers in Black neighborhoods for children to learn and practice the sport.

According to a survey by the Aspen Institute, family income shapes the sports that youth play, and children from higher-income families are more likely to play sports like tennis. Tennis is considered a country club sport, requiring funds for court time, private lessons, group classes, tournament participation, and a coach in order to play competitively.
